7月25日，是鹤峰县燕子镇新行村组织党员集体学习的“支部主题党日”，一位背着挎包的村民将一张请假条递交到新行村党支部书记办公室。请假条上写道：“因我有特殊情况，不能来参加学习，特此请假一次。” 请假人名叫向丕权，今年86岁，1956年入党，29年前在原鹤峰县文化局工作，1988年7月退休后，回燕子镇新行村四组与老伴居住。作为一名退休干部、老党员，自“两学一做”学习教育开展以来，向丕权学得非常认真，凡是村上组织的学习活动，他一次都不落下。但是，随着年岁已高，身体状态欠佳，这段时间村上组织开展的“支部主题党日”活动参加不了。怎么办?一时间，这个问题成了向丕权的“心病”。
在向丕权看来，作为一名党员，人虽退休了，党员身份没有退休，信仰没有变，学习无论如何都不能停止。于是，他在家中坚持看书报和电视新闻，学习党的方针政策，按时交党费和参加村党支部党员会。
“共产党员向党组织交纳党费和按时参加组织活动，是党员的一项义务，是党员应有的组织观念和纪律观念。”向丕权恳切地说。
鹤峰燕子镇新行村党支部书记覃长宪收到请假条后，在该村党员大会上现场宣读了请假条。他说：“一位80多岁的党员，有如此强烈的组织观念和纪律原则，值得我们所有党员深思和学习。虽然这张假条只有短短几行字，却胜过长篇大论。他给我们上了一堂生动的党课!”
“我们村党支部会议召开时间，都是事先通过电话、村里的党员微信群通知向丕权老党员。向丕权无论是酷暑严寒，还是风霜雪雨，只要他身体好就从没有迟到过。开会时，他常常是戴着一副老花镜，仔细阅读学习材料。每次讨论时，他都积极发言。”谈及老党员向丕权，党员覃长荣连声夸赞。据了解，向丕权自从退休回到新行村后，自己拿出3万多元修了0.5公里的公路，还经常帮助村民协调矛盾纠纷等，在当地传为佳话。
“现在，我视力有点差了，耳朵也有点背了，但是只要我还做得动，就要多干些力所能及的事。”向丕权朴实地说。
