In this summer holidays,I read a book called ,it was written by Charles Dickens, one of the most famous English writers. He wrote lots of wonderful novels. This book is one of his compositions.

People always like to compare with their friends. It is a big foible of all the people. If other people have a lot of money,we also want to be rich.If all the people around us are poor ,we never mind that we are very poor, too.we will not ashamed because of our folly. This is a social problem.

If we never possess anything,we will not mind we lost some thing.Since we don’t want to be very rich ,we will not feel despond because poor.

The protagonist of this novel is Pip (Handel). His parents died when he was a baby. His sister had brought him up ‘by hand’.His sister married to Joe Gargery, the village blacksmith. They didn’t have much money, and Pip never went to school to study. But he was often very happy .Because all of his friends are like him.It isn’t very unfortunate to them, this is their lives. But by a chance,Pip helped a convict; he gave much food to him. Then he met Miss Havisham,a very strange old woman and she was very rich.

Four years later,Miss Havisham wants Pip to be removed from his home and educated as a gentleman who expects inherit a fortune when he grow up.

After hearing that .Pip started to despise his poor friends. He even feel ashamed because he live with the poor man .Pip’s ‘great expectations’ destroyed his life.

This novel told us that we cannot compare with others .Don’t feel envy at the others money. And if one day you be very rich ,please don’t despise your poor friends.

I won"t forget a novel called "Waiting for Goldie" forever because it leaves a deep impression on my mind.

The novel was about a missing bird. The main character, Danny, was waiting for it with worry. Unluckily, the bird didn"t fly back. Danny went into the quarry and claimed up the rocks to find it. Finally, the bird was found, but it was hurt. Though the plot of this novel is simple, we can learn a lot from the main character, Danny.

When the bird didn"t come back, Danny"s heart was full of worries. Obviously, Danny was a person with great responsibility. At the same time, I realize that we should be responsible for things that we promise to do.

Danny didn"t give up climbing the rocks, even he failed to climb again and again. He could continue climbing the rocks because he hoped to get rid of the nest so that those evil falcons would go away. I can make the following conclusions: First, nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it. Second, "Do not, for one repulse, give up the purpose that you resolved to effect". If we have courage to do things we want to do, we will achieve our goals as well.

I was touched deeply when Danny gave up hurting the baby chick. Danny said that all his angry feelings gushed away, like water down a plughole. Kindness cures all things, doesn"t it? If you try your best to forgive others who disturb you. you will feel much happier.

Books are like medicine. Correct reading may cure foolishness. If you want to improve your spirit, just read more books.

Waiting for the Goldie

During a pigeon racing, Danny’s pigeon—Goldie didn’t come back on time. Danny was very nervous because it was granddad’s favorite and he would visit his granddad who was in hospital because of a heart attack that night. Granddad wanted him to bring good news about Goldie. But Goldie didn’t come back before Danny left for hospital.

Granddad was anxious to know the result of the racing. But Goldie didn’t come back, so Danny was very nervous. To take granddad easy, Danny told a lie that Goldie won the first place of the race, which made him very happy.

Danny thought that peregrine falcon killed Goldie, so he wanted to pull down the falcons’ nests to revenge. But when he climbed up to the nest and saw a chick, he thought of Goldie and all his angry feelings gush away, like water down a plughole. Then he gave up revenge himself on falcons.

When he wanted to leave the rest, he found he was tired and couldn’t move. Then he nearly fell down. Suddenly he found Goldie in a tiny crack with a broken leg. He stuffed her inside his shirt and took her home. Finally, Danny managed to help Goldie recover before Granddad coming back home from the hospital.

 Black Dan

Stevie’s father had a new job as a forest warden, so they moved to a tiny cottage on the edge of a thick forest, where they met Black Dan, which was a racing greyhound left by Old Billy, the former forest warden. The forester told them that Old Billy had seven greyhounds ever and Black Dan was the seventh. Stevie fell in love with Black Dan, the seventh at the first sight and begged his father to keep it.

The first night was spooky. Stevie heard a weird noise which sounded like a dog howling and he also saw six pairs of red, fiery eyes in the forest through his bedroom window. Black Dan, the seventh was desperate to get out when he heard the howl.

The next day, Stevie told his father about his strange experience but his father didn’t care about it. Then Stevie took Black Dan the seventh for a run in the forest and they met the forester, from whom he knew the other Black Dans were killed by Old Billy one by one just because they were too old to win the races. Steven doubted whether the six pairs of eyes were the ghost dogs’.

At that night, the howl appeared again. Black Dan the seventh ran into the forest crazily followed by Stevie. But soon, Stevie found that he was surrounded by six ghost dogs and Black Dan the seventh. After a minute of panic, Stevie ran away and crashed into the lead mine, which his father warned him not to go into. However, under such a urgent circumstance, Stevie had no other choice but run into the tunnel.

Unfortunately, the ghost dogs sniffed him out and appeared at the mine entrance. Stevie was running deeper into the mine when a rock tripped him up. He got a bad leg and almost dropped into the mine shaft when Black Dan the seventh appeared. He dragged Stevie back and scared off the ghost dogs.

In the following days, Stevie along with Black Dan explored every path in that forest but didn’t even see a flicker of a ghost dog’s tail. At last, Stevie forced himself to forget that experience and convinced himself that there was no such stuff as ghost dogs.

This story sounds like a thriller. I read it at night and felt a little bit scary. I even pulled back the curtains to see if there fiery eyes outside the window. Of course there was nothing. However, I still felt someone was watching me, somewhere in the darkness.

I still couldn’t work out what the six dogs were. Were they ghosts, just as Stevie thought? Or just Stevie’s imagination?

I feel there is one possibility that the other six Black Dans didn’t die because they didn’t eat the poisoned meat or didn’t eat enough poisoned meat to kill themselves. Instead, they hid themselves somewhere in the forest and waited one day to revenge.

And then I think Stevie is a shadow of ourselves. He is kind and loves animals and sometimes he may became scary easily but he can also show great courage in the face of danger. His life is quite different from ours, but it’s really wonderful.

Stevie is the main character of the story. His kindness made him keep the dog. He was curious so he parted his bedroom curtains and saw six fiery eyes. His mind of ghost dogs showed he was good at imagining. He showed his bravery when the tough words came out from him mouth. And I felt that he was really cute when he tagged his father’s arm, pleading to keep the dog, when he said “ You wimp. Fancy being cared of six rabbits” and when he tried not to wince after hurting a leg…

After all, if Stevie didn’t have so much excellent personalities, this story wouldn’t be so attractive.

  The Ultimate Trainers

Jake found a pair of perfect trainers on top of a cardboard box. So he took them. To his surprise, after putting on the shoes, he could run without puffing and panting. It seemed that it was a pair of magic shoes that could help him win the Area Championships. But Jake’s friend, Anna insisted that anyone could win if he won those trainers. So it could not prove anything. Finally, Jake made up his mind that he would take part in the running race in his battered old trainers. However, after Jake and Anna hurried to school, they found that the locker was snapped off and the trainers were gone. Then, they met two adults, Luther and Mariah, who were from the future and Luther was the owner of the trainers. They came to Jake’s time to get the trainers back. The race came finally. And it was easy to spot that Kevin Beadle was wearing the shoes. Because of the magic power of the shoes, Kevin won the first prize while Jake only got the tenth place. But a moment later, Kevin started jogging. It was clear that he was heavily punished by the angry trainers. At last, Mariah and Luther got their trainers back.

The personality potion

Danny Dolan was a shy boy who didn’t want to go and play outside. He liked reading detective series like Kit Kane, Kit Detective and always couldn’t help imaging himself to be Kit.

One day when Danny went to school, he met Wicks who always picked on younger kids on the bus. Because there were so many people on the bus that Danny had no choice but to sit next to Wicks. Wicks robbed Danny’s favorite food---fudge bars but Danny didn’t have the guts to stand up to him. At that time, Mrs. Morgan told the children there would be an audition for a new play about gangsters next Monday. In the past, Danny had no interest in school activities but now he liked the characters while he was too nervous to take part in the audition.  On the way home, Danny turned to his uncle who was an

inventor for help. Uncle Hal promised to help him by giving him a potion.

Finally, the potion did work. Danny stood up to Wicks and got the leading part. As a matter of fact, there was no personality potion at all. It was his confidence that help him win the role.

The personality potion

Danny was a gentle boy. He liked curing up in his bed and reading. His favorite food was fudge bar. But his mother thought it was not normal for Danny to spend his life hiding in the bedroom.

Wicks, a student in the year above, always picked on younger kids. One day, Wick asked Danny to hand in his lunch which was Danny’s favorite food, fudge bar. Danny didn’t want to. So Wicks gave him a wrist burn. At last, Wicks robbed his fudge bar. Danny felt angry and ashamed. Then, there was a play about gangsters at school. Danny wanted to play Bugsy, the leading character of the play. But he was not confident enough. Then Danny’s uncle who was an inventor gave him a little bottle of inky green liquid. Uncle Hal said that it was personality potion and it can bring Danny magic power to win the audition.

He let the liquid slip down his throat and became confident. When Wicks came to Danny and asked for the second fudge bar, Danny refused to give him. The crowd saw what happened and couldn’t believe that it was Danny, standing up to the worst bully in the school. Finally, with the help of the crowd, Wicks ran off and Danny won. Besides, Danny did well in the audition and earned others’ respect because of his brilliant behavior. He thought the potion did work and made him show all his talents.

A few days later, when Danny went to Uncle Hal’s again, he knew the truth: there is not the personality potion. What made him become brave and excellent was his own confidence.
